Virginia Holocaust Museum Welcomes Austrian Intern, The Richmond Jewish News

Projekt Beschreibung

Virginia Holocaust Museum Welcomes Austrian Intern Michael Gruebl, an 18-year-old Austrian decided to pass his civil duty at the Virginia Holocaust Museum. Since 1992, young Austrians have the opportunity to work at Holocaust Museums all over the World instead of serving in the Austrian Army. As Members of this program, called „GEDENKDIENST“ (which means „remembrance service „) over 100 Austrians already passed their 14 months abroad. Gedenkdienst interns already work at well-known institutions like the Washington Holocaust Museum, The Simon Wiesenthal Center and Yad Vashem. Michael has to serve 2 months longer than his colleagues back home in Austria, but nevertheless, he decided to do a work „far more interesting than serving as a soldier“. The Gedenkdienst offers him the opportunity to pass his civil duty doing something useful and important „instead of learning how to shoot“. He and the other Gedenkdienst interns work for a „never again „. The Virginia Holocaust Museum is proud to have Michael study with us and thanks the Austrian Government for letting him be apart of something with such great importance. More information about the Gedenkdienst can be found on
