„PROJEKT GEDENKDIENST“

Andreas Maislinger, who teaches political science in Innsbruck, is the originsator of a scheme entitled „Projekt Gedenkdienst“. It provides those who opt for civilian rather than military service with the chance to spend the duration of their service term at a Holocaust memorial site abroad. At first it looked as though the scheme would come to nothing because of the lack of funding. But now the first „Memorial Serviceman“, Georg Mayer from Tyrol, has taken up his duties at the Auschwitz Memorial. The scheme’s organisers plan to initiate other programmes, like that which provides scholarships for academic research at Auschwitz Museum.
